Delicious Labor

Vanessa Watson

In the process of preparing your labor environment all of your five senses matter. What you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel will impact your labor experience. Set up your environment to positively tap into your senses. Here we will explore taste.

Think about your favorite meals and snacks, food that brings a joyful taste to your palate. Include easily digestible foods high in protein and fiber to help you keep your energy up while your body works to bring your baby Earth side. Examples include nuts, seeds, whole fruits and veggies. To make these types of items easily accessible consider veggie & fruit treys, trail mix, protein balls or bars. When chewing does not seem appealing or doable, smoothies are a great option. One smoothie can pack tons of energy boosting nutrients easy to sip in between contractions.

Some moms experience nausea and vomiting during labor. In this case try sips of water and ice chips to maintain hydration. Your provider can offer options to help ease nausea. Not eating does run the risk of a drop in blood sugar levels which can lead to fatigue. If you are not experiencing nausea but have no desire to eat, a spoonful of peanut butter or honey will help keep you going strong.

If you plan to deliver in a hospital there are usually restrictions on eating and drinking, in which case IV fluids are provided. Familiarize yourself with the facility's policies and procedures. Review with your provider, share your feelings & desires, discuss a plan that best meets your needs. If you plan to deliver at home or in a free standing birth center you will have the freedom to eat and drink as you please. For a birth center birth check the options and policies related to preparing food in the facility and storage. If preparing for a home birth, you can address meal and snack prep anyway that works best for you. You, your partner or anyone in your support team can prepare snacks and meals in advance or at the first sign of labor. If food is to be prepared while you are laboring, designate this tasks to someone other than your primary support person.

Remember, plan to eat enjoyable food to please your palate. Include easily digestible items that will quickly be available for energy. Devise a desirable plan with your provider and support team.
